Property One
An eLF that sets up a scenario for students
to investigate.

Congratulations! You
have been selected to help save the Orangutan! This has been made possible
because of an exciting discovery.
The Indonesian government has discovered a pristine
island that they have called Aman Island. It may be perfect for a sanctuary
for the orangutan. It has been decided that your team will investigate
the island to see if it is suitable for orangutans. There are several
activities you will need to do to assess the suitability of the island,
and then report back to the Indonesian government so that they can make
decisions about what resources, restrictions to access and ongoing support
will be needed for this sanctuary to work.
If this strategy works, there may be the possibility
of implementing strategies across Indonesia to save all orangutan habitats.
| Activities |
Activities 1. Investigate the habitat
of the Orangutan in Indonesia. Remember that habitat consists of four
main categories - Food, shelter (from weather and predators), water
and somewhere safe to raise young. NOTE- the first resource website
in the Online Research area is full of background information on habitats
and causes of their destruction.2. Find out what factors are contributing
to the destruction of their habitat.3. Investigate the Aman Island
information page in the resource viewer - this will describe the newly-discovered
island so that you can determine whether it will be suitable for an
orangutan sanctuary.4. Your team must create a report on the suitability
of the island for a sanctuary - what would have to be done to the
island to make it a suitable habitat for the orangutan? This report
can be in electronic format (web page, Powerpoint) or paper format,
but must include the following:* Text* Images* At least one map* References
(where you got your information)The report must be addressed to the
Indonesian Government, must be proofread and must be in your own words. An
assessment rubric is included in the Online Research area. Please
save a copy and read it before you start. |
